LAWN BOWLING

Lawn bowling is an excellent opportunity for blind and visually impaired to participate in an outdoor activity.

The Ontario Lawn Bowls Association working in conjunction with OBSA to provide all the lawn bowling clubs in Ontario with the information on events for the upcoming season, and encourage the clubs to welcome and assist visually impaired to participate in the sport.

Participants can range in age from twelve to indefinite.  For Provincial and National competition purposes there are three sight categories for which an ophthalmologist is required to complete a sight classification form.

As the purpose of OBSA is to encourage and promote participation from the ground level upwards, two of the yearly competitions are held purely for a participation factor to provide a forum which allows a visually impaired bowler to bowl with others in an atorganized event.

The Provincial tournament is the qualifying event to represent Ontario the National level, sponsored by the Canadian Blind Sports Association.  Benefits of taking part in lawn bowling are:

1. retention or development of sense of direction and distances
2. retention or development of coordination
3. retention or development of concentration and learning to focus.

The sport provides a good cardiovascular workout, enables the development of arm and leg strength, and provides excellent social interaction
